

UX Design Training Series: Design principles, Practices & Methods
User experience (UX) is a powerful tool. Strong UX connects customers with your products and services in a way that helps them do what they want and have a meaningful and relevant experience with your organization.
Tech Manitoba, in partnership with Johnston Group, is offering a three-part, immersive training series to upskill and improve your organizations’ UX design for internal applications and customer-focused digital touchpoints. Participants will come away from this training with a better understanding UX design principals, best practices and practical methods for involving customers in the design process. Training will be provided by zu Academy.

Session #1: Introduction to UX Design

- Writing for screens
- Writing for UX
Session #3: Users & Testing
“Let’s involve users & customers in the process of design”
June 22 | 9 am – 1 pm

- Personas (What are they and how do you create them)
- Writing user testing tasks
- Analyzing and synthesizing testing results
Who this is for: This course is suited for anyone who has been a part of a software, website or app project and want to level up their skills. We’ll focus on building your knowledge of User Experience (UX) and give you hands on experience using wireframing tools. We’ll also teach you about the world of Information Architecture, Sitemaps, and Content Strategy for those involved in planning and producing content. And finally, you’ll learn the art of user testing, an important step in the design process that almost anyone can do. Ideal for business analysts, project managers, customer experience, marketing, or even designers who want to expand skills outside their normal processes.
About zu Academy
zu Academy is a hands-on training framework that combines traditional lecture-based learning with case studies and facilitated exercises that allow participants to practice methods with expert guidance. Course participants will learn from Albert Jame, zu Strategy Director, Chelsey Schaffel, zu UX Lead, and members of the zu Design Team all with extensive training from international leaders in the space such as Human Factors International, Neilson Norman, Google and IDEO. Over the past year the zu team has trained hundreds of participants spanning dozens of industries and roles.

Albert Jame
Strategy Director & Partner
Albert’s current role is split between representing zu in the digital industry and leading strategy projects for zu clients. He’s a local leader for the digital industry and speaks at conferences and events, educating the public on how to keep up with technology and the ever-changing landscape. His fresh and dynamic attitude belies his seasoned perspective in matters of business, strategy, and creative work. Albert helps organizations navigate through the digital transformation, from problem identification all the way through to solution and execution. At work, Albert leads strategy projects, conducts workshops, facilitates Design Thinking session and works within the executive.
Chelsey Schaffel
UX Lead
Chelsey is continuously learning and expanding her skillset as a strategist and UX Lead. Her depth of knowledge in Design Thinking is evident as she works closely with clients to uncover root problems, develop creative solutions and iterate on these solutions through user-centred design methodologies. She balances the perspective of the client with the users’ needs and bridges them with zu expertise.
Brian Ohlmann
Designer
Brian helps clients visually communicate to their users, rebrand their organizations, and discovers new ways to amplify the user experience. His extensive experience throughout Western Canada is evident through his work and depth of understanding of user-centred design, extensive background in digital experience and indisputable curiosity is evident through his creative executions and enhanced with his quirky sense of humour.
